Have you ever seen slime mold? It's basically a single-celled pile of goo with many nuclei. It's very appealing to a biologist (me) and quite fun to stumble upon one in nature. They live here in temperate forests, quietly and harmlessly creeping along the moist ground.

You'd never guess how smart they are by just looking at them. But they are! Are they smarter than you or me? Maybe!

Slime molds are hard to classify. They don't fit into the plant, animal, or fungi kingdoms very well. They're a bit like fungi, and move like microscopic animals - but are much bigger. They are, after all, visible without a microscope. Some scientists classify slime molds as protists - like ameba, or other microscopic organisms. You see the dilemma, right?
